Now in our 26th season, the Freewill Shakespeare Festival brings Edmonton a new kind of summer “Shakespeareience” as we move indoors to the Myer Horowitz Theatre to present the comedic favourite The Taming of the Shrew.

Following up her heart-warming production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream last year, Artistic Director Marianne Copithorne takes on the classic battle of the sexes in The Taming of the Shrew. Suitors in Padua are eager to have the ill-tempered Katherine married off to someone, just not to any of them—they’re all chasing after her sister, Bianca. So, when the charismatic Petruchio comes to town to find a wife, Bianca’s suitors convince him to pursue Katherine. To everyone’s surprise, including Katherine’s, he succeeds.

“Producing Shakespeare indoors has been happening for centuries, but it will be a new and exciting challenge for us,” Artistic Director Marianne Copithorne says. “We’ll take every opportunity to simulate the outdoor experience – and that’s what’s going to make this season so unique. Our audience can depend on having just as much fun as they have in the past. Shakespeare’s plays can be enjoyed anywhere as long as they are performed with intelligence and wit – and that’s exactly what we’ll continue to do.”

One of the biggest changes (aside from being indoors) is our ticketing system this season. This year we’re operating with assigned seating to better accommodate our audience. We encourage you to purchase you tickets early to ensure that you can: avoid lineups; guarantee you get a seat; pick where you sit; and most importantly, get to sit with your friends!
